This presentation provides a detailed
explanation of services one might expect from a service
center. General cost structures for standard services
are examined, as is the quality of work that should be
expected from your provider. Advantages of outsourcing:
Inventory control and consumable item values, larger
staff, more experience in some instances, more equipment
available for the task, consulting services, and
troubleshooting knowledge. Value added benefits: Service
centers purchase more product and therefore are (should
be) able to negotiate and offer lower price points.

The evolution
and transition of self sufficient filing departments is
examined, as well as the evolution of the saw shop. What
is the impact of the retirement of senior skilled saw
engineers without a passage of knowledge, in combination
with filers who have left the mill arena to work for
themselves? Is there a declining concern for filing
staffs? What are the ramifications?

Detailed illustrations of
methods used to determine price points for services
rendered are discussed. Why do some service prices vary
greatly when the quantities are lower or method of
repair simpler? Behind the scenes operations at service
centers have to be accounted for. What are the
circumstances where your service provider absorbs costs
so you are unaffected by a negative transaction?
